As suppliers we were a bit shocked when we heard Dovado were discontinuing the UMR as it was such a well received product, we thought: why fix what isn’t broken. However it is the way of the consumer electronics market. Technology improvements turnaround in very short timescales, so manufacturers have to have the next product lined up. The 3GN and 4GR have faster WiFi chips so that they can provide 802.11n which is becoming the standard wireless protocol. The 4GR also has very fast (gigabit) ethernet and they both can support extremely fast (greater than 21Mbps) modems. They have abandoned the detachable antenna, which was a very strong factor for Irish customers. We did point this out to Dovado numerous times and now in hindsight I think they acknowledge that it may have been better to have retained that feature.
So, in summary, there is no problem with the UMR, the 3GN and 4GR simply take advantage of faster WiFi, ethernet and mobile broadband capability.
