Sierra 888 misbehaving with UMR? Get latest firmware v3.05

Dovado released firmware v3.0.5 for the UMR yesterday – their sixth firmware update since the launch of the UMR in June 2008.

Of particular relevance to Irish users is a fix for a problem affecting some people with a Sierra Compass 888 modem. The firmware update resolves a low-power mode issue which was resulting in poor performance for this modem in some cases previously. A similar fix has been implemented for the Sierra 885 modem.

Open DNSWe’d like to register our thanks for the speed with which Dovado responded to our request for the Custom DNS feature, which facilitates the use of Open DNS on the UMR. This is something required by one of our customers.

Announcing the new firmware, the Dovado support team said the following:

We have just put up the latest 3.0.5 firmware.

For those of you living in the Nordics, you’ll be happy to know that we have added support for the Sony Ericsson modem, as sold by Telenor and their subsidiaries.

We have also added support for the new Huawei E1550 modem sold by
Tele2/Comviq for the new pre-paid service plan. We heard that the
supermarkets (yes, supermarkets!!) are selling them quite quickly due to their very appealing price.

For the Australian crowd, we have added support for the ZTE MF636BP as delivered by Bigpond.

There are a couple more modems, features, improvements & fixes you can read about on the site/release notes.

As always, we are looking at supporting new modems, however, some of them are proving to be difficult to get a hold of, especially the 3G/HSPA+ models (anything faster than 7.2Mbps). The operators have been busy buying up all stock they could get their hands on, so do bear with us! It may take some time, but we’re going to get there for sure.

As a quick note, we just want to say how delighted that so many of you have followed our firmware updates (this being our 6th) since launch of the UMR this month last year when we only supported an initial 5 USB modems. Today we have support for around 60 modems, and we’re aiming for more! We also hope that you’re making good use of the features we have introduced back in 3.0 and allow us to amaze you some more in coming releases. :-)

Finally, if any of you are going to be in Singapore this month for the
Communicasia event (June 16-19), do please pop by our booth at the Swedish stand where we’ll be showing a couple of cool new things……so, stay tuned! We’ll send out press releases about that to those of you subscribing for them.
