I want to set up the Connection Tracker on my Dovado – what IP addresses should I use?

The Connection Tracker screen can be found among the Internet configuration screens on the Dovado UMR.

The aim of the Dovado UMR’s Connection Tracker is to keep your Internet Connection alive by detecting drops in the connection and restarting the 3G connection, network interface or the UMR itself. Detecting drops in the connection is achieved by pinging 2 or 3 prominent public IP addresses, ideally located in different countries.

For example Irish users may want to enter one Irish address, one from somewhere else in Europe and maybe one from the US. For example:

  • 81.17.242.107 blacknight.com (Ireland)
  • 87.248.113.14 yahoo.com (UK)
  • 66.102.9.104 google.com (US)

The public IP addresses must respond to ping requests (by no means all IP addresses do this). At the time of writing, the sample addresses respond to pings, but this might not always be the case. You can test the addresses you have used by clicking on the Test Now button. You can also modify the interval between pings – 5 minutes is probably reasonable.

  1. Personally, I’ve been using only two numbers for my connection tracker. Both of them are from OpenDNS.com. I’ve not had a problem with them before. As they are a company specifically for internet communications and they offer their address openly, I think its good choice.
Their numbers are :208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
A note on setting the ping interval, if you set it for 1 min and your UMR can’t connect (for one reason or another) it will restart almost 1 per min until it connects. This can be horrible if you need to login and change a setting. 2 min is the least I would use.
