Hi Mike - the O2 Hotshot (aka the Huawei E586 MiFi) is a modem+short range router and won't be supported on the Dovado routers. Sorry to disappoint. If you got hold of an unlocked (or O2 Ireland) modem you could use the Hotshot's SIM as needed.

Hi
would the dovado router work with O2 hotshot. I've tried 2 other routers - D-Link DWR-131 and a Zoom 4506 with no success so far. Kind regards

Hi Gerry,
The solution in the end was to get an actual mobile broadband sim card. I don't want to complain here about the retail supplier who sold me what they said was a MBB SIM card (three in fact and I had at least one tablet with me the first time) but emobile correctly pointed out on looking at their computer records that the SIM I was using was incorrect for a Galaxy Tablet or any tablet for that matter as it was a voice and text SIM. On buying an "e-mobile prepay MBB SIM Pack" from the emobile shop and using the apn 'broadband.eircommbb.ie' with no username nor password I see that the ip address on 3g is 109.125.x.y. All is well.

Have you tried broadband.mymeteor.ie? It's possible that the data plan associated with the SIM does not provide any public IP connectivity.

Hi Gerry, Thanks for the reply. It's a tablet with Android 3.1 I'm using with an emobile SIM. From looking at Settings->Wireless and networks->Mobile Networks->Access point Names I see the existing APN has the following details:

APN - wap.mymeteor.ie
Proxy - 010.085.085.085
Port - 8799
User name - my
Password - *** [presumably this is wap]
Mobile country code - 272
Mobile networks code - 03
Authentication type - PAP
APN type - internet
APN protocol - IPv4
The other remaining values are not set.

I created another APN and set it to broadband.eircommbb.ie and used the other values above but then I was unable to get a 3g connection nor an IP address as seen with 'ip route' using the Terminal Emulator apk downloaded from the marketplace. With the APN of wap.mymeteor.ie the android gets an IP address like 10.195.71.178. It's a non 10.x.x.x address I'm looking for and methinks the proxy needs to be something different.

HI Michael - what APN are you using? Does the eircom one work? broadband.eircombb.ie

If you browse the settings on the software provided with the dongle on a PC, can you determine the APN?

Does anyone know the public APN for emobile? Currently the only details I can find on the web deal with 10.85.85.85 which give a private address. - Michael

Hi Damian

Agreed - the connection tracker should restart the connection in the circumstances you describe. Try the basic things first:

ensure you're using the open.internet Access Point Name for O2 Ireland

upgrade to the latest firmware (currently 4.3.0)

perform a reset of the router

I believe 1 minute is probably too frequent for the connection tracker 3-5 minutes might be more appropriate.

Unfortunately we can't rule out "operator tactics" as there are reports that operators may manage contention on masts by dropping connections and blocking or reducing to EDGE or GPRS for a period.

If the problem persists, you should raise a support ticket with Dovado at http://www.dovado.com/SupportForm.html

I would like to clarify the above comment about 'calving'.
In summary, my problem is that if I dont have a PC or Handheld device on and connected via ethernet or wifi to the Dovado, the internet connection is dropped.
The router doesnt restart as prescribed in it settings.
Also, it is not a reasonable solution to leave a computer on for this purpose - thats what the router is for.

I'm curious about the outcome of t0mm13b's situation.
I have an O2 dongle (Huawei E1752) in use with the Dovado 3GN. Like t0mm13b it disconnects when the link is not in use (defined as browsing from any of the terminals in the house - wired and wireless) for a period of approx, but not more than 1.5 - 2 hours.
I have enabled connection tracker on a 1 minute schedule (as well as DynDNS & NTP - which also poll the internet), to no avail. Regardless of what outbound connections - and recovery options (redial and restart after 3 failed redials) - the router just calves.
It reports that the internet connection could not be started, and the router must be logged in and rebooted from the webconsole.
Operator tactics aside, a recovery mode of restart should be more than sufficient to get back online - but this automated method doesnt seem to work.
Any ideas or solutions?
