A new word has been coined:
3·Ge·nu·i·ty (thrē’jə-nyōō’ĭ-tē) Pronunciation Key
n. pl. 3·Ge·nu·i·ties

- an ingenious, inventive or imaginative contrivance or contraption to improve the operation of one’s mobile broadband
- innovation borne out of sheer frustration and pathological stubbornness to get at least one or two bars out of that fecking 3G yoke, often involving sellotape and any number of household implements
It’s one thing getting a Dovado UMR, so at least you don’t have to sit by the drafty upstairs window where your USB modem gets the best signal when blue-tacked at a suitable angle – but to what lengths have people in Ireland gone to enhance their 3G reception?
Anecdotes abound about adapting the following items to attract a stronger signal to your modem:
- a flour sieve
- a Pringles carton
- a Sky satellite dish
- some incense and a swing of the thurible
What 3Genuous techniques have you tried? If they’ve been successful there are many who’d love to hear about them and see the pictures. Send details to gerry@commsoft.ie so we can share your 3Genuity with the nation here on 3G-router.ie.

It is not hard to boost reception but this is only half the problem
it is very hard to boost transmission as you need to have an antenna of the correct length to be in tune, if it is not the corect length it will reduce the transmit signal.(theory of maximum power transfer)
This is why moving the 3G card to the best signal is such a good Idea.
A fair point, Joe – how does one determine the correct antenna length? Of the 3G antennas available from solwise.ie for example, what are the specifications to look out for?
I tell you what i did…i bought a 36 omnidirectional antenna..mounted it up outside my house, and attached the cable coming from that on to my 36 modem, i notice a “good” improvement but my connection can and does drop from time to time and i have to reboot the computer just to get the internet connection working again. If i found out further ways to improve signal i am all ears.
Gerry,
modem very easy to set up, not a bother at all. AND yes it seems to be working fine with my blueface internet based phone. The first call was a bit echoy, i changed the cat leads for some newer and shorter ones (not sure if this was the problem though) and now it is fine. Crystal clear call to my wife in france this morning.
cheers
