That is probably the question that causes most head-scratching for Irish Dovado users, during the initial wizard configuration of the Dovado USB Mobile Broadband Router (UMR).
Your Access Point Name (APN) identifies the access point on your provider’s 3G network your modem will use to connect to the internet. There may be some information provided with your USB modem by the mobile phone company specifying the APN you should use. You can also check the default settings on the software used to configure the USB modem on your computer. Continued…

As suppliers we were a bit shocked when we heard Dovado were discontinuing the UMR as it was such a well received product, we thought: why fix what isn’t broken. However it is the way of the consumer electronics market. Technology improvements turnaround in very short timescales, so manufacturers have to have the next product lined up. The 3GN and 4GR have faster WiFi chips so that they can provide 802.11n which is becoming the standard wireless protocol. The 4GR also has very fast (gigabit) ethernet and they both can support extremely fast (greater than 21Mbps) modems. They have abandoned the detachable antenna, which was a very strong factor for Irish customers. We did point this out to Dovado numerous times and now in hindsight I think they acknowledge that it may have been better to have retained that feature.
So, in summary, there is no problem with the UMR, the 3GN and 4GR simply take advantage of faster WiFi, ethernet and mobile broadband capability.

Dovado UMR
The 4dBi antenna, which comes with the UMR, has an outdoors range of 300m unobstructed. In favourable conditions indoors (e.g. where the material in the walls isn’t very obstructive) it would be reasonable to see a WiFi range of up to 100m.
However, given the variation in materials in Irish houses it’s pretty meaningless to specify an indoor range. We generally recommend that customers try out the router with the standard antenna in their location and if they discover that the WiFi coverage needs a boost, the great thing about the UMR is that you can replace the standard antenna with a higher gain antenna best suited to your specific requirements.
Dovado 3GN
The antenna on the 3GN has a gain of 3dBi and is not detachable, so the wireless range is not quite as far-reaching as the UMR and cannot be extended with a higher gain antenna. Having said that, the WiFi coverage of the 3GN should be sufficient for typical home environments.
